What Type Of House Best Suits Your Needs (Video Transcription)

Hi, my name is George Belleville. I’m a realtor in Maryland, and I’m recording this video to discuss the topic of deciding what type of house will best suit your needs. There are all different types of houses and locations that you can consider, and a lot of times when people are buying a house, they come into it with some preconceived notions about what might work for them or what they want, and a lot of them are based on history and notion. And there’s one really good question that you can ask that I’ll share with you in a little bit, but let’s just talk about broadly the types of houses at least you find in our area that most people are choosing between.

  1. Apartment Style Houses

    • Benefits:
      • No exterior maintenance (roof, siding, etc.)
      • Exterior maintenance, snow shoveling, etc. are taken care of
      • Ideal for travelers
    • Downsides:
      • Noise
      • Proximity to neighbors
  2. Townhouse Style Houses

    • Benefits:
      • Some yard space
      • More house for the money
      • Less exterior maintenance compared to single-family homes
    • Downsides:
      • Limited privacy compared to single-family homes
  3. Single Family Houses

    • Benefits:
      • More space and privacy
    • Downsides:
      • Complete responsibility for exterior maintenance

The question I want to give you that you should ask yourself about anything that you’re looking at about a house, especially interior features or big kitchen, small kitchen, the question to ask yourself, what does that do for me? Because as I said, people come into this with experiences or a certain house they didn’t like, or they grew up in a certain style of house, or, you know, they really feel like they want a big kitchen, but when you find when you talk to them, you find that they don’t really cook that much. So why buy a house with a big kitchen if you’re not gonna cook that much? So that question of what does that do for me is a great question to ask.

Another suggestion is to observe your current living space:

  • Identify rooms you spend the most time in.
  • Evaluate what aspects of those rooms you find frustrating or enjoyable.

Conclusion Asking, “What does this do for me?” and understanding how you currently live in your space are two great things to consider while deciding, other than just price and location.
